Description: Ryota Sakamoto is one of the top-ranked players of BTOOOM!, an online battle game. But no amount of simulated warfare could have propared him for what is to come… Ryota wakes one evening to find himself dangling from a tree by a parachute with no recollection of how he got there. Before he can orient himself to his unfamiliar surroundings, Ryota is attacked. As a barrage of explosives rain down on him, Ryota realizes that he too has a pack of bombs…bombs that look very similar to the ones used in BTOOOM! Ryota may have mastered the online game, but can he come out on top in this real-life game of survival?!

Uh, you guys might wanna read up on the criticism of the Stanford prison experiment’s set-up. There are some serious methodological flaws in there. To claim that it is evidence of anything in spite of that is silly and since it has never been replicated (due to ethics concerns) it is unreasonable to draw conclusions about the human psyche and behavior on the basis of that experiment alone.

I mean, heck, one of the guards was an actor who, by his own admission, created the persona of a sadistic guard for himself because he thought that it would be boring if they all just got along and nothing happened during the experiment. He furthermore was curious to see how far the experimenters would let him go.

Yes, but can't you see how even that is a psychological process? inventing a 'persona' or 'character' in a stressful situations that can do things morally, and ethically, that you wouldn't want to do is incredibly common. Sometimes, you can not even invent a whole character, you can just leave your body and go into a place in the room, like the corner, and its like autopilot engages and your body can just do things. It doesn't work all the time, and the Stanford prison experiment is not the end-all, be all study on morality (You can read that people who even applied for this type of experiments typically skew agressive-dominant if you google Stanford Heavy Criticism Engine) but its still a very good study on what the mind does during stress.

As a side note, did this chapter seem a little porn-y to anyone else?

Lets be real here, the "rape" aspect of this manga is the mangaka's go to method for "ecchi". The moral factor here is extremely thin. Even when Himeko's friends were raped it was just depicted as some sort of orgy scene.

I can see where you're going with this, but the Stanford Prison Experiment was about the interaction between the "prisoners" and the "guards," and about how readily both sides were willing to conform to the social roles they were expected to play. Btooom! is about a game of battle royale mixed with bombs that's designed to shove the inhumanity committed by the players directly to their audience through the media. Think about Btooom! as a reality television series: if they're good for the show, then they're good for the show.

The major difference between the two is that the Stanford Prison Experiment focused on getting results on what they deemed to be normal people with normal psychological states whereas Btooom! focused more on getting results from people who were considered the "scum of society." Of course, the environment was different in both, and only one advocates killing another human being. However, in the Stanford Prison Experiment both parties were shown to adapt to their roles, in almost a complete contrast to Btooom! whereas the majority of the players acted just as they were expected to.

Yes and i thinking about if u want to know about someone true nature just give them absolute power.

Stanford Prison Experiment give them "guard" status and Btoom give them power to kill but of cause situation can turn into upside down :D

about a good guys turn in to a bad guys because place or situation it's seem similar with this experiment

Zimbardo - Stanford Prison Experiment

Uh... it's plenty easy. Ethics work regardless of whether there may be legal intervention. He was like that from the start and just didn't want to do jail-time if you have been following. He is social scum after all(like most of the others). The fat guy in the beginning liked rape even before he came to the island and that was something he didn't get jailed for. If anything, the soldier guy was better since he disproved the 'All bad guys are rapists cliche'(get the reference lol? :P).

Since there are no laws and such on an uninhabited island, it's not easy for one to keep in their sexual desires and lust.

Anyone Else wish that Himeko and Sakamoto had sex already so the stupid author could not Milk more intense or whatever u call it situation for Himeko to loss her virginity to a rapist ? :|

Getting old now :|

btw can't she just send some signals and attracts Sakamoto's Attention ? they seems to be close

As if being virgin was the only reason to make the situation "intense". With a body like that she will keep being targeted for rape on that island, with all the scumbags in there I would not be surprise if that situation happens again, even if she does lose her virginity. Some may call her "waifu-material" but the author probably sees her as "raipu-material"

...I wonder if she's ever going to stop being a rape magnet.... Any time a guy so much as looks at her she falls into the same situation.

Well, it's not just that.

Like the guy was thinking on the page here:

Ah, after so long, a chapter with good plot :>

I was serious, yes. Perhaps in a smaller scale, like you said, when reading this manga, people's mind automatically call it a rape-flag whenever any male player prey upon that girl

And dear god, no. It is not sensible nor logical at all that raping is first thing to come to the character's mind. Not when he 1. Just lost his team that he were going to depend on to win. 2. Is in battle mode. 3. is thinking that he is being chased for his life.

I admit my tone was a bit judging. I was writing that comment with that intention. Couldn't help it, because it rubs me in a wrong way too when people automatically associate things in manga to rape. And then the guy I replied to was asking that "are you serious" question to, though to the character.

An author present the material as it is. If some of the multiple interpretation of a details bother you, simply don't think that it is true. I don't think it is logical for the guy to think about rape right away. But if in next chapter, the author thinks that is a good idea, I will then accept that as a fact.

Well, it is true that some people can jump to the whole "rape" conclusion out of nowhere but in this instance however, all the signs were there: The desperation, his perverted side being shown in previous chapter and his first thought upon seeing her not being "A target..." but instead being "A girl.... :)".

Also, since the manga is about 10 chapters ahead of us in Japan, you could technically find out what happens right now...

Man... If all of those 5 unknowns are still alive I'll call bullshit so hard...
I know it's meant to show something, for the plot to progress where we can see, blah blah blah, but the game has been going on for I don't even remember how long, and if not a single person of 32 died away from the "main party" it's gonna be really stupid...
I know I'm just whining, but if you stop to think about it, it's really stupid for nobody to have died so far besides those we know of, specially considering how people were dropping like flies on the first couple of days.

dammit kaguya, sakamoto has enough troubles without you actively trying to raise death flags.

Spoiler

welllet's not forget everyone got forced into this island for something, and this guy seems to fit the "pervert" bill.

I am hoping he gets murdered though, and between te girl defending herself, his former teammates who he betrayed, oda who's out to kill them and sakamoto who'll protect her there's a lot of people with reason to do so.

Looks like someone slapped the mangka and said, "THIS ISN'T GANTZ! YOU HAVE TO END THE DAMN SERIES SOMETIME!". i am thankful because this series has been dragging on for awhile now.

You win the internet today.

In case you are not joking, you can see it as you did, or you can see it as this:

Spoiler

Just saying tho, if you weren't joking, it means you brain is more associated with that kinda thing more than any other sensible reasons.

...Are you serious?

Just because a person comes to that conclusion doesn't meant his brain is more associated with rape then anything else.

You're reading a manga, the whole series is a death game and yet this character has been almost raped more times then almost killed.

It's not a big stretch to assume that seeing the mentally unstable guy sneak up behind the lone rape magnet is going to be another "attempted rape scenario".

It's a like a putting a clown in a pie factory. You can see what's going to happen from a mile away.

It's actually a lot more sensible then thinking "Oh look, this mentally unstable pervert that was literally running for his dear life a second ago just dropped everything that he was doing because he saw what looks like a big breasted barely clothed wounded girl. He's probably sneaking up behind her while grinning and thinking "A girl...." because he wants to strategically kill her"

Sorry for the rant but the whole "If anyone thinks that the guy's going to try to rape her then that means your mind is full of rape" comment really rubbed me the wrong way.

That developer guy has a chip, clear as day in this chapter.

I think that's his kill-defenceless-girl face. Not sure though whether that's better or worse.

Right to the end, I can't seem to buy the premise.

Honestly, human rights organization would storm Japan in a massive wave if they tried to float the idea of a game death island.
