I personally like it, but we don't have the deuteragonist yet (dark elf Ariane), and those two kind of form the backbone. If you don't like their team-up after a few chapters, then you probably should drop it, as they are pretty much joined at the hip. Out of curiosity, what isekai are the 'select few' and are really good? My favorite is Konosuba, but that one doesn't take itself seriously at all. And Dungeon Seeker, because it is so incredibly bad and takes itself way too seriously.  Re:Zero seems to be the flag-bearer for the genre.

For me it's "tsuki ga michibiku isekai douchuu". Though you need to go beyond the beginning. Starting Tsige, and especially when the heroes are introduced, shit starts to get real.

While the beginning makes it looks like the classic "help the weak demi-human", in reality it doesn't turn that way. The same way, at the beginning, it starts like an harem, but finally there is none (the two girls followers are the only love-interest).

Also, there is no big villain, no big good guys. Everybody has its objective who is neither good or bad. The same goes for the protagonist, it will be pointed at some point (though it's in the latest chapters). (A big example:

Spoiler
)

The girls have personnality, maybe more than the protagonist.

Also, it's not a one-way story. I explain myself: in most isekai story, you know what is the final goal rapidly, and only expect things leading to this ending (for example: (1) goal: kill the demon king. What you expect: killing general 1, save a city, killing general 2, avoid a plot,....; (2) goal: unify the world. What you expect: become friends with race A, resolve a crisis, be friends with race B, kill a dictator, ....) with the protagonist never returning to the places he visited.

In tsuki ga, you never know what will happen. Not that this is random, it's more we don't know what to do to reach his goal.

If you are patient (wait at least 10 chapters),Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu will turn good.

Tl;dr: Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu is a really good novel but with a really slow start.

[armored lariat] is definitely the thing i'd do when wearing that kind of humongous armor

I can't be the only one that think that every time that the MC is looking straight it just seem like he is taking out his tongue.

what have you done, cannot unsee! D:

MAY THE HAREM BEGIN

oh mu gog, that little fluffball named Ponta is so precious

I keep thinking of the Pursuer from DS2 every time I see the MC in full armour...

storylike i dropped kumo desu ga. its extremely boring, at first ok its fun looking how its gets stronger but its soooooooooooo slow phased that  since i read the novel i still was trying to keep on it. but by the time it made a jump from a strong evolution to practically a god i gave up.. also the other characters are bore as hell... ,  this story on other hand its not slow but its linear unlike other manga`s or novel`s  this guy doesnt do actions by itself once he mets that dark elf.. just goes with the flow.. LITERALLY << since in one chapter in novel later the dark elf scold him when he confess that just goes where wind blows XD

I won't say a thing about your opinion on the stories, but at least use spoiler tags, even if it's from the LN, people might want to give it a try later on.

Next chapter raw: shit gets real, shit gets awesome.

New Saga has the worst pacing though. Chapters end like the last two pages are missing.

And they xerox art too. Never said it was a masterpiece, just a personal preference. Hell, I like Dungeon Seeker, as a kitschy/b-movie manga example of so-bad-it's-good, but it's nothing more than that. Arifureta falls into the same category (although if it becomes as bad as others say, I may jump ship).

Also, here's hoping Skull Knight, Hanafubuku, and the Four Kings of the World start wrecking the God Hand thirty years from now when Berserk concludes.

Kumo Desu Ga is definitely one of the best. And I would include Tsuyokute New Saga (mediocre artwork and all), but I'm not sure if it even counts, as he fused with a younger alternate version of himself in the same world. And Maou-Sama is funny too, just slightly behind Konosuba.

Time to spook some fucbois!

The only ones I'd actually truly recommend (besides Konosuba) are Kumo Desu Ga, and Lax Demon.  The former is about a girl who reincarnates as basically the lowest organism on the food chain in the place she was born and has to survive in it using her wits alone.  The latter is about a demon with vague human memories trying to live as a human.  It only has a novel at the moment, sadly.  Neither of them really follow the standard Isekai formula, and both have fleshed out worlds and likable characters.  Kumo itself ends up becoming almost a deconstruction of the Isekai genre later in the novel.

Can't speak for him, but my personal suggestions, aside from Konosuba, are probably the following:

1. "Kumo desu ga, nani ka?" as my personal favorite. Great art, cute and humurous, regular updates and great execution of the "reborn as a spider" setting.
2. Isekai Tensei Soudouki [relatively little overpowered-ness in it, but decent amount of humour]
3. Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken [lack of updates plagues this, though]
4. Mushoku Tensei [gets a mention, mostly due to good art quality and regular updates, though the story can be hit-or-miss]
5. Chihoukishi Hans no Junan [This one is somewhat unique, since the main character is not actually reincarnated. It's about a knight that left service in the royal court and moved out to the boonies, only to then have to deal with a bunch of japanese people with super-powers that got transported to his world. It's an interesting twist on the genre, though it consists mostly of comedy that ends up bordering slapstick.]

Those are my top-5 suggestions at this point. [Number 4 is definitely NOT among my personal top-5 anymore, but I felt it deserved this place on the list regardless.]

This is the peak of being generic isekai.

I want Ponta so bad right now mmm...
She/he's just so cute mmm...~!

I dunno man, this is pretty generic isekai so far.  Very black-and-white morality and has a protagonist whose power level is clearly on a different plane entirely from the world he arrived in, resulting in literally no tension whatsoever during fight scenes and dramatic events.  Follows the standard formula of -> Transfer -> Rescue a carriage being pillaged by bandits (BONUS if the people you rescue are cute girls that are about to be raped) -> get directions to the nearest town -> adventurer's guild -> more saving of cute girls from generic, cookie-cutter ugly villains that aren't the least bit interesting or believable.

I'm still going to give this a follow though.  It hasn't done anything incredibly offensive yet, I think I'll drop this until something as bad as, I don't know, the spirit fox that he picked up transforms into a cute, human girl and starts fawning over him.  That will confirm to me finally that this is irredeemably, irrevocably, completely, shit.  I was honestly praying that when I saw him take the fox as a pet that it wouldn't transform into a human.  Thank God it didn't, or at least, not yet.

Maybe it won't become every other Isekai I've read on novelupdates besides a select few. I don't have any faith it will though.  It hasn't hooked me at all yet and I'm not interested in any character other than the protagonist who I'm lukewarm on.

Came in expecting generic isekai, came out feeling surprisingly good about this. The MC's attitude really makes all the difference.

Best thing I've seen in a while

Spoiler

Disney movie when?

For all it's worth this isekai story is at least cute (excluding all the rapey and slavey stuff).

The main character has a cute skull and is adorable while joyfully slaughtering bandits (this comment is not gay because he has no penis ;D), and his pet is a motherfluffing fluff fox.

yep, as a normal isekai it doesn't show a new interesting thing (I was actually thinking of unfollowing this one)

but PONTA!! goddammit that's a carol level type of fluffy fox

Skulls are not cute well there are people love dead squirrels but skulls fetichist are way too much for me.

I can imagine this getting pass with the publisher:
 - I want to write a most generic isekai that ever generic'ed with no unique storytelling, no worldbuilding, no good villains, no character development and no challenge or struggle for main character.

 - Why would we publish it?

 - Main character has a skull face like that one popular isekai that got it's own anime.

 - Sold! But you should add cute maskot character.

Usually, its "Because the Protagonist was a Pharmacist/Vet/Doctor/Accountant/MBA/*insert some other professional degree*"... I prefer this to them butchering the professional knowledge because they themselves are usually laypersons.
