Description: One day in the 21st century, a gate opened
in the middle of the Ginza district of
Tokyo. Out of the gate poured soldiers and
strange creatures, and they soon made Ginza
look like an image of hell. The gate apparently connected Japan to another world, a world
with a militant empire and many supernatural creatures. The Japanese Self-Defense Force
decided to send a small group, led by a
soldier who's also an otaku, into the other
world on a reconnaissance mission. They're
meant to learn what they can about the empire (and its plans), the world, and the people.

They're hardly in the world yet, though, when
they come across a village destroyed by a
giant fire-breathing dragon. The only survivor
is an unconscious elven girl they find hidden
in a well. Now they feel like they must warn
the nearby towns about the dragon, and do what they can to help. On the way, they'll meet more magical, female companions, and learn more about this dangerous new world.

... and the failure is entirely preventable through sufficient training.

Speaking as someone whom was once a qualified small arms expert via the USMC...this is an erroneous statement. The training helps, but conditions, target motion, shooting stance, balance, and other factors all affect performance. Especially with a friendly in relatively close proximity to the target.

That most police officers have such low accuracy at close range in real-life situations is exactly why it's relevant.

It's one thing to have all the time in the world to be calmly lining up the sights, firing on harmless immobile targets, at a shooting range with consistent lighting. But at night, in a poorly lit area (especially for someone who was just indoors, without time for their eyes to adjust), against a fast moving hostile, while their body is reacting to the adrenaline rush from triggered by the stress of the situation?

First, you're implying police officers faithfully keep up with their training. There's a reason why I hesitate to accept police statistics as reliable outcomes of consistent training. I get where you're coming from, but such a statistic doesn't account for practice.
Second, I totally get what you're saying about the conditions, but look at this:
http://bato.to/read/_/277257/gate-thus-the-jsdf-fought-there_ch40v2_by_ak-scanlations/47
Absolutely no way that should happen, stab wound or not. That is straight up sloppy. Also, though the opponent moved fast, by no means is a fast target unhittable.
Third, even if we accept the police statistics, for him to miss every single shot is unfathomable.
Finally, my original point being that sufficient training can prevent such a fuckup, Yanagida only has himself to blame for missing every shot. At least the base will be alerted, but skimping on practice ("sufficient" instead of "prepared") may very well be his demise. If, in fact, the jsdf does not train it's soldiers to hit moving targets, or drill them to hit on the move, or train them to fight on the spur, then that would be a failure of the jsdf.

Not trying to get into an argument here. You're proposing a reason for yanagida's failure, and for the most part I understand. I'm saying that it's no excuse and the failure is entirely preventable through sufficient training.

Well, I get what you're saying, but my point still stands: skimp on practice and you shoot like shit. That most police officers have low accuracy doesn't necessarily refute that. Yanagida should have spent more time training. Now, he's paying the price.

Eh... Based on police firearm discharge statistics, generally the accuracy of shots fired from 0-to-6 feet away in real-life situations is only around 40~50%. Why should a REMF like Yanagida be expected to do any better in a poorly lit area at night, against an assailant that can literally move with inhuman agility?

This is why you don't skimp on marksmanship. Practice makes (and keeps) perfect. Missing point blank with a handgun is just absurd. Also, the gunshots would not only attract nearby grunts, but would likely make the bunny bleed out the ears and be concussed from the shock, so the author is confirmed as no gunz.

Right.

So, you can use a 48" pipe to fuel a jet, rihgt?

What are you talking about?

You're only touching on methods which I'm not disagreeing with. But you're wrong about it being innocuous.

The economics of mining uranium and plummeting prices for yellowcake over the past couple of decades has meant a move away from small-bore tunneling in artisanal mines towards heavy mechanisation and spoil processing of the output of larger mines such as Olympic Dam in Australia which I mentioned earlier. Radon, a health hazard is going to be present in those mines anyway just as it is in coal mines and other underground workings. The important thing about uranium production is that it is a fraction of the effort of mining for, say, coal or copper which has all the same problems with radon but requires hundreds or thousands of times more tunneling and material extraction -- about 7 billion tonnes of coal is dug up and burned each year worldwide compared to an annual production of about 60,000 tonnes of yellowcake (typical viable ore levels are 1 to 2% uranium). More and more uranium production of suitable ore bodies is being done by in-situ leach, pumping acid into boreholes and extracting the uranium from the acid chemically afterwards. This can be cheaper depending on the ore body and doesn't release nearly as much radon into the atmosphere and doesn't require humans to work deep underground.

The Chinese government proudly announced a few years back that the number of deaths annually in their coal-mining industry had fallen below 4,000 a year. The total number of deaths in uranium mining worldwide doesn't even begin to match that kind of industrial-level slaughter.

As for the situation in Japan regarding uranium, they have tens of thousands of tonnes of spent fuel in store which they plan to reprocess to produce new fuel for their reactor fleet. A couple of days ago I read a report saying they possessed over 40 tonnes of plutonium (some of which is held in store abroad, in France and the UK where Japanese fuel was previously reprocessed) although that isn't suitable for use in nuclear weapons due to contamination with Pu-240, a non-fissile isotope. Uranium supply isn't a problem for them in terms of price or availability. Oil and gas (and coal to some extent) are another matter.

Uranium ore by itself is pretty innocuous stuff.

You're only touching on methods which I'm not disagreeing with. But you're wrong about it being innocuous. The reason the other processes came about is because there is radiation emission from the ore and it produces radon gas which is nasty and prompted the cessation of tunnel mining and the reason for a lot of the closed tunnel mine clean up in process in the U.S. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uranium_mining

btw civil engineering is my profession. Been a gold panner/miner for over 20 yrs. So I'm not personally unfamiliar with the hazards involved.

i know right... i was like "which is which?"

thanks for enlighten me about the bunny girl...

What?

You saw her get shot into her back by our lunatic political officer friend.

Even if she survies that... attacking him puts her into a bad... position.

Mining uranium...rather, mining most radioactives, is fairly hazardous and typically exposes workers to radiation and poisonous gases.

Actually no. Uranium ore by itself is pretty innocuous stuff. A lot of it is produced as an extra in gold and copper mines like the giant Olympic Dam mine complex in south Australia as well as from dedicated uranium mines like the Cigar Lake complex in Canada. There are even tentative plans to process coal power station waste for the uranium content in fly ash ponds which can test out at 2000 parts per million uranium. The Chinese are especially interested in this idea since they don't have much in the way of mineable uranium resources in their own country.

Uranium isn't scarce or expensive "here", no need to dig it up over "there" secretly. Oil and gas though, Japan has to import all the carbon-based fuel they need all of the time and having a secure uninterruptable source of previously-untapped fossil fuels would be much more beneficial for them.

It was Japanese scientists who developed a prototype method of extracting uranium from seawater, their estimate of the cost was $300 per kilo of raw uranium metal recoverable from the Kuroshio (Black Current) that sweeps up the Honshu Pacific coast. At the moment minehead yellowcake (U3O8) costs about $80 a kilo, converted to metal that would be about 100 bucks a kilo so harvesting the sea isn't worth it (yet).

@imercenary

Right.

Gate is unable to support any large scale transportation, even not wide enough if you build those giant pipes for industry.

Spoiler

FYI, "giant pipes for industry" are nowhere near the size that would be needed to fit a tank, helicopter or jet.

I didnt feel the need to add any more. Basically all countries would screw over the gate world one way or another its just some would do it politely while others wouldn't.

America- takes you on a date to nice restaurant then has its way with you becoming a sugur daddy or you becoming a booty call.

Japan- takes you on a picnic date (tight assholes) and turns you into a booty call

Russia- take you to McDonalds and expects sex or else it will rape you.

China- Makes you instant noodles and demands sex as payment, after sex/rape occurs you find out a few months later the SOB had Aids and didnt tell you.

Mining uranium...rather, mining most radioactives, is fairly hazardous and typically exposes workers to radiation and poisonous gases. The method of processing the raw ore is also dangerous and requires a bit of area. That doesn't even cover the training required by the workers themselves. I don't see Alnus base being able to support that level of industry.  And before you rattle off about just hauling the ore back to Japan to process there, stop and think a moment. How are people likely to react to truck loads of raw radioactive material being hauled through downtown Tokyo? Especially considering the Fukishima meltdown.

That's actually pretty close.

Tell me how many rape scenes you have seen up to this point.

You do the research and count them if you're questioning me.

Yanagida missed the last few shots on purpose, if I had money I'd bet dat nice bunny ass is still firm and intact. I also theorize he'll most likely survive but keep his mouth shut about the attacker's identity.

that sounds to good of an outcome, both of them were trying to kill each other but they only managed to wound each other. They will most likely start interrogating the bunny spy.

Are you a troll or can't even see different between "any" and  "many"? Try harder next time pls.

To quote /ak/ scans : You suck

I love this damn manga but I wish thier was side storys showing what would happen if the gate appeared in other countries.

America- We would retaliate from the attack, and when we notice the slavery we declare war for the peace and freedom of their world. set up a puppet democracy and begin to trade for resources.  Then slowly take out other non democratic nations or nations that due things we don't approve of and at the same time win over the populace with mcdonalds and coke.

Russia- would probably take over and rape the shit out of the worlds. Keep the king in place as a puppet and allow the continuation of slavery because slavery is free labor. Take resources forcefully while and begin to take over all surrounding countries.

China- Would probably declare the gate and the world beyond as part of china. Invade and eliminate all opposition, take resources destroying the ecosystem. Begin to eat anything that moves and import it as a delicacy. Immigrate like a billion people into the gate and begin to set another Chinese nation. slave labor camps are for sure gonna happen, they would keep slavery.

JAPAN- I doubt another rape of nanking would happen but I 100% guarantee comfort women. Im sorry but I would join any army that gave me a chance to sleep with a harpy, or any other humanoid monster girl.

-snipped-

That's some bias you got over there. You don't think that maybe the other countries (that you said will just rape and pillage) would do the same things the US would have done? Other countries has it's own good guys too.

What you're saying would be a very bad idea. You saw how the political side of things happened in this manga and how a lot of people (mostly from a certain country too) got pissed because they're saying their country would not do this and that. I think they're stupid because it's fiction (and you don't see the other nationalities complaining) but still. You got people calling the author a left-winger and everything, you really want to see that happen again? :D

Bunnies... No, rabbits, hares and the like (calling them bunnies would be an understatement). They're pretty savage, comparable to their cousins, the rats.

Carnage and slaughter, not above killing their own kin. Yes, they seem fluffy and kind, but they can do some pretty nasty damage if fleeing fails.
