Description: One day in the 21st century, a gate opened
in the middle of the Ginza district of
Tokyo. Out of the gate poured soldiers and
strange creatures, and they soon made Ginza
look like an image of hell. The gate apparently connected Japan to another world, a world
with a militant empire and many supernatural creatures. The Japanese Self-Defense Force
decided to send a small group, led by a
soldier who's also an otaku, into the other
world on a reconnaissance mission. They're
meant to learn what they can about the empire (and its plans), the world, and the people.

They're hardly in the world yet, though, when
they come across a village destroyed by a
giant fire-breathing dragon. The only survivor
is an unconscious elven girl they find hidden
in a well. Now they feel like they must warn
the nearby towns about the dragon, and do what they can to help. On the way, they'll meet more magical, female companions, and learn more about this dangerous new world.

Dem phallic rocks at Schwarz Forest fkinrule34

First off, where did this picture come from? I don't remember this happening. Second, why has no one found it odd that a guy could determine that the fingerprints match just by looking at it with his bare eyes!!! I thought you needed computers to match fingerprints!!

very incorrect, all fingerprints are compared with a database to cut down the millions of fingerprints to a few dozen. Then a fingerprint expert compares the origin of the swirl to the break points, and if the lines matchs up he sends it to another fingerprint expert to have him individually come to a conclusion on his own. Real life is not csi Miami, computers can do it but they are not perfect.

Wish they could make an anime of this good manga it is truly a hidden gem.

Unlike the second world war Planes, now is very advanced and Powerful, it means you need more money to buy one and it takes years to master a plane. It is not expendable unlike WWII planes and the pilots is not a idiot either. In this age people value their lives and afraid of death.

Honor is nothing if you are a corpse, instead, the honor will go to someone that just orders and not fight or the force that you belong to. They will give you temporary honors but in the passage of time they will just fade away.

why_Why, you are hereby under arrest for killing the joke. You have the right (and are encouraged) to remain silent.

RIP in peace, kamikaze joke.

Why not kamikaze into the dragon? The pilot is JAPANESE!

Just a suggestion, but hear me out here. How about you guys who feel it is necessary to show off your military knowledge and expertise just PM each other or go to a forum. Or AT LEAST put that stuff in a spoiler tag. I don't know about anyone else, but your long ass articles are quite obnoxious.

I'm only looking at how it reacted to the jets and so far I can tell that it's got the manoeuvrability of a helicopter able to turn on a dime, and the speed of a jet just below Mach 1. It hasn't been shown exceeding the speed of sound, although it's probably arrogant considering how pissed it got when a foreign object flies faster than it does.

That's not accounting for how intelligent it may be though, cause if it's as smart as a human than those jets could be in for trouble when they return as try the same tactic. So far, I'm pegging it at the intelligence equal to a toddler, a toddler with the pompous pride of a N-Korean patriot. We'll just have to see if there's more at later chapters.

Taking it out will be no walk in the park either. Small arms fire are useless, even the .50 BMG can't scratch its armour. A 20 MM is twice the size of a .50 and the 30 MM used by the A-10's GAU-8 is twice the size of a 20 MM but there has never been a recorded case of a dogfight with A-10s using it in the air so that's still up for debate. (Japan doesn't have A-10s anyway, so if they appear in the other world, then the storyline just took a turn for the worst considering how the US have been acting in the storyline)

We know that the AT Rockets by a man-portable launcher can work, so missiles would be the best option. The problem then would be missile guidance since I highly doubt dumb-fire rockets will hit it. Heat-seekers would be in question since no one knows how it would fair against body heat even for a dragon that size.

It's hard to judge overall speed just based on static panels, but that makes sense. It's up to the mangaka in the end since it's his universe, so his rules. Hehe.

I agree with you on the guns, that's why I mentioned earlier era fighters. They used a mix of MG's and explosive cannon rounds--the cannons could really tear stuff up. (Obviously the JDF would not have any of those--this is just pure speculation for entertainment purposes).

In terms of penetration, the GAU-8 should have no problem (if it does, then all bets are off at that point, might as well just run away), but yes, it was intended to bust tanks not aircraft. I haven't read up on it in ages, but I thought the gun fire system could sync to the radar to theoretically engage aerial targets but I might be mis-remembering how other systems work (modern fighters can use the radar to give firing solutions to the gun).

Zipang (the anime is great) has some great battles using modern tech vs. WWII tech, including how they use their ship gun to shoot down aircraft with single shots (using radar for firing solutions).

(On heat seekers, it's all up to the mangaka, but modern IR missiles are practically all-aspect, capable of locking onto an aircraft from different angles, not just the engine nozzle, which means their sensitivity is very high)

High mobility only helps combined with speed (I mean in the sense that in order to be mobile, it has to change its direction, slowing it down. So, unless it can speed up again to get out of danger really fast, a wide enough shot spread can hit it), if the spread of the shot is wide enough even if it dodges, it can still be hit. But since it's a fictional, magical animal who knows (how many laws of physics like inertia it can break).

Firing rockets at a flying target? I think you've been playing too many fighter jet video games with unlimited ammo and invulnerability cheats on.

The sentence doesn't mention flying targets. It says what it says, encounters with enemies (air + ground), capiche? It just happened we started by talking about the dragon. (I may not have been clear, but I didn't think that required clarification).

Actually, I haven't played air sims in over a decade, but I preferred realistic WWII style ones against other humans on-line, haven't even sat in an arcade one in decades. I prefer first person shooters. Ya, games are fun...so? Though I don't see how any of that is relevant: we're talking about a comic book imagining how real tech may or may not work against fictional beings.

1. That picture is from author's pixiv. Kind of a poster.

2. Well, in the past they still using fingerprint if the man can't sign right? Plus, in modern day, they can use fingerprint powder (black granular, aluminum flake, black magnetic, etc) to make them visible.

He didn't, but they don't know since they don't have the tech and don't know how it works, he just applied pressure so the guy confessed.

@dirtloot Your thinking of DNA, fingerprinting is literately looking at the unique patterns on fingerprints. You see them using computer on shows like CSI because there are databases of fingerprints and a computer can instantly sift through them. When an expect witness is presenting his evidence in a courtroom involving fingerprints it's usually blown up pictures (for clarity to the jury) of the defendants fingerprints and those on evidence.

Just wondering what would happen if the JSDF showed the emperor and all the other senators a tv screen and proceed to show a cg animated simulation of the imperial capital being destroyed by nuclear warhead.

Either way, a Korean war era jet fighter with a mix of heavy cannons and dumb rockets would probably be as much as needed for anything they encounter in the alternate world.

This + drifters = awesome.

minus the rape stuff.. always really awkward and horrible

they only bring old guns and equipment into the gate because they dont want to risk brand new equipment. Also, in case that stuff gets stolen, they can always turn around and bring in a new model to out class it.   The planes didn't lose, technically, they were just checking out its maneuverability and abilities.  Im pretty sure one strafing run from an A-10 warthog would put the dragon in the ground.

assuming you can get  strafing on the high mobility dragons

correct me if I'm wrong, but missiles require a target lock don't they? missiles are designed to lock on to the heat from another fighter's exhaust, which a dragon doesn't have. hitting with an unguided missile is extremely unlikely. better off with a helicopter armed with a chaingun and rocket pods. or even flak from the ground.

flak would REALLY mess that thing up.

i'm not a military guy so my information about the missiles could be out of date. locking on to a radar signature would also be an issue since it was confirmed to have stealth-like properties. laser-guided on an agile target would be an issue as well.

I don't know what the JDF would be armed with, but modern heat seekers are vastly superior to the one's that originally came out in the sixties. Modern IR guided missiles such as the venerable Sidewinder AIM-9 (having been upgraded multiple times) can supposedly lock on to the sunlight reflected off of aircraft fuselages and probably heat leaking out of other parts of the air-frame (I'd assume friction would heat up leading edges of its airfoil as well). And nothing operates in a vacuum, as stealth techniques advance weapons designers constantly tweak their stuff to defeat stealth as well. It's a constant game of one-upsmanship, although it may have slowed down since the end of the cold war.

Of course, we can assume dragon-scale would not be heat reflective, but it would have body heat from flight exertion and when it uses it's flame breath there must be some latent heat around the head. I don't know why it would have stealth characteristics, since it's body pretty bulky and spiky unless for some convenient plot reason its scales are radar absorbing too. Once again, modern radars are vastly superior to what they used to be. Stealth aircraft aren't  necessarily fully radar-defeating either, they just reduce the signature so that they are more difficult to notice. An adjustment of the radar system might be enough to have weapons lock onto the dragon. Or just have someone in a spotter plane drop reflective paint onto the dragon first. A little riskier, but should be doable.

Still, using a cannon would probably be the best option, and using the advantage of speed one would use "boom and zoom" tactics. Gain high altitude, hit max speed, strafe across the dragon, then zoom away before it can retaliate. I don't see what advantage of loitering at the same altitude or speed of the dragon had (as shown by the fact the pilot got flamed). There is no honor in modern air warfare anyways, since the idea is to use your weapons systems to maximum advantage and at the opponents lowest advantage. The only reason dog fighting is still relevant is in cases of ROE where you want visual confirmation of a target, otherwise it's fire and forget all the way baby. The JDF should be the only modern tech in the air in that universe, so as soon as flying winged thing was spotted, once can assume it is a hostile beast. No point in getting that close.

Either way, a Korean war era jet fighter with a mix of heavy cannons and dumb rockets would probably be as much as needed for anything they encounter in the alternate world. (some people may be misunderstanding this last sentence; it just means when going on a *general* mission, all they probably need is a mix of cannons and rockets for just about anything they've encountered so far--not necessarily the dragon. The pilot would use his best discretion on what system to use on fantastical beasts...)

(Or a few A-10 warthogs would clean up everything)

The Romans had ice, too.

You could collect it from somewhere cold and store it in a very well insulated building.
Also Deserts are freezing cold at night, so they can be a good place to store ice (and other refrigerated goods) underground.
Some deep caves might work, too.

Of course it was a pleasure only the rich could afford...

edit:

Basic ice storage 101. Add to that the fact that you can cover the ice with an insulating material (like straw hay). That is how many people would maintain an ice supply over the warmer months. Cut the ice out of lakes during the winter, and put it into storage units, like the caves or a basement/cellar style set-up. Cover it with the insulating material, and you were set.

The part about missiles is mostly correct, with two small exceptions. There are no unguided "missiles", those are called rockets, since the guidance is the feature that distinguishes missiles from rockets. The other is, that there are no laser-guided anti-air missiles, since that kind of guidance system only works on relatively immobile ground targets. You simply can't illuminate a jet or even just a helicopter reliably with a laser.

I would not be so sure about flak having impact on the dragon, though. We already know that the scales of this thing are extremely hard, so the shrapnel might just bounce off, unlike the Panzerfaust 3 that has already proven effective.

have a question here.

Where they will get the ice?

Well, they have magic. It is not really that far-fetched that they'd have court magicians that could create ice in abundance for them.

edit:

Finally, one could use a little ingenuity. The Romans used to make ice in the deserts of North Africa or Palestine by taking advantage of the low humidity (and therefore the low temperatures at night). They would put what they wanted to freeze in a pit well-insulated with straw. The pit would be covered with highly-polished shields or other objects during the day, to reflect the heat of the sun; at night, the pit would be uncovered so that it could lose heat to the desert air.
