Description: The year is 1991 and 6th grader Yaguchi Haruo only has video games to live for. He's not popular in school and he's neither handsome, funny, nice nor even friendly. The only thing he has going for him is that he is good at video games. One day at the local arcade, he plays Oono Akira, a fellow classmate but who's popular, smart, pretty and a rich girl that absolutely destroys him at Street Fighter II. Not only does he lose to her 30 times in a row, he can’t beat her at any game. Haruo can’t seem to shake Akira off as she follows him from arcade to arcade everyday after school and beats him every time. As weird as it sounds, the odd duo begins a strange bond and friendship.

I want a 3rd girl just for the lolz someone who is a PC master race.

"A rich girl who never speaks, loves videogames, and is talented at nearly everything falls in love with a punk boy who can't keep himself out of the arcades".

If you told me this (pretty damn accurate) synopsis of this manga, I'd have laughed and closed the page. Sounds like horrible wish fulfillment, doesn't it? A pretty girlfriend that never talks back and adores videogames as much as the guy does? Give me a break!

Then you read the manga. Wow. Without speaking a word the author manages to present Oono as a character with her own traits, struggles, and dreams. The tired old setup of "WOW A GIRL IS GOOD AT VIDEOGAMES" is touched upon lightly then thrown completely to the side in favor of an incredibly enjoying to read half-rivalry half-romance relationship with Haruo, our main character.

And what a damn good main character he is. One of my biggest let downs when I get into most romance manga is the main character. It feels as if they either have no agency or no spine, just floating through the story like a balloon, the main love interest tugging them along carrying most of the weight on their shoulders. Haruo on the other hand is fucking great. He has a shit load of flaws yet has a charismatic fire to him when it comes to games. He's not afraid to clash or chase after his love interest either. They both work together to further their relationship, and damn is it a joy to watch.

A very fun manga that defied my expectations. Look forward to more chapters.

In Haruo's case he literally worked to further their relationship. Like, fuck, falling for Oono actually made him a better, more hardworking person.

Guile is the best wingman

We used paper clips, tape . . . it was hell, I tell you!

Honestly, Post-it Notes caught on faster than any technology I have ever seen before or since.  I think we'd forgotten we ever did anything else within a month of the first ones showing up.  They did exactly what we wanted them to do better than we'd ever imagined it could be done.  There was no downside, none.  The only thing that came close in terms of instant comfort with new tech was highlighters.

No downside to post-it notes?

It's made of dead trees and chemicals.

For some reason that Eva reference startled me a little. It's weird to think that the majority of the chapters so far took place before Evangelion - I imagine it as something that was always there, like mountains or the sun or Post-It Notes. (Did you know those were only released to the public in 1980? What did they even do before then?!)

Damn, Haruo got beat up by everyone this chapter lol. Haruo and Akira date next chapter plz.

Not time for 3P play yet, Haruo. Smash came out much later :P

Yeah... 1999, which means that Haruo will be 2/3 of the way through his first year of college when it comes out. We probably won't see it in this series.

Haruo and Akira on a date, would do some.... heavy gaming...

Urgh, i don't like love triangle when you know the final couple since chapter one.

It's just painful to look at Hidaka chapters, poor girl.

let flat vs plot commence.

I always come here expecting to be really nostalgic about 90s arcade games (oh god fighting vipers) but I never expected a random gegege reference.

fucking love triangles

I'm finding this manga about children in the early 90's competitive gaming scene and a girl who communicates primarily with headbutts more compelling than the usual romance shtick. Maybe I'm just sore about finally beating Goro in MKII and getting instantly rinsed by Shao Kahn. Gen X, lots to hate, lots to love.

I am glad the author didn't do a REMEMBER THIS? flashback when she took out her necklace. It's been a long time since Haruo gave the ring to Oono, but readers should remember!

Dayum, I sure wish for this series to never end
