Of course we (kids?) like Takezo and Hiro.  They are a totally adorable couple (and thanks for the images).  We (I) also like Satowa and Chica, Tetsuki and Isaki, and Akira and Sensei.  It's almost a pity that there aren't any more females (other than Satowa's Mom, music store granny, and evil granny) for tAdachi, Kouta, and the other guy to go for (and please, no super deviant fan fiction about that).

Whenever the next year comes around (spring?), I'm expecting an influx of kouhais and for most of them to be girls.

Kind of like the works (most of them) by Adachi Mitsuru, the romance is kind of secondary to the sport (or music). I like it, because it allows the romance to proceed more naturally without every panel and every character's waking moment focusing on it. Subtle is best!

This manga just nails that balance as the characters develop their skills and become stronger together while forming close personal bonds with one another. Of course, you see this in hundreds of other shonen manga, but few execute this sort of progression at this high of a level, where the relationships between the characters feel really genuine.

P.S.  I won't allow any romance with Nene, damnit!!!

I heard you kids like Takezou and Hiro (from sensei's twitter):

Hm, it says that I need a local (japan) address when I tried to checkout. Did you purchase the songs by chance, and are you outside of japan? Sorry for the questions, I really want Tenkyuu OTL

I haven't actually bought it, so I may not be able to help. :( Have you tried using a fake or public address in Japan (e.g. the address of a hotel)? I've done that for video games, and that usually does the trick. You may have to use an Amazon Gift Card if they're only taking local debit/credit cards.

As someone who has participated in orchestral competitions in the past, we never had life affirming speeches after coming up short. In manga competitions, everyone does their best, and loses to other teams that are also doing their best.

The reality of competitions is that you rarely ever do your best, and that's what sucks about losing. People make mistakes, and sometimes you underperform. That happens to everyone, but no one seems to acknowledge that fact in manga.

Everyone in the group knows the mistakes that were made, and nobody wants to comment on them until some time has passed. More often than not after losing a competition, we'd basically leave in silence - everyone already well aware of their shortcomings.

I don't know, I relate to those aspects of this story, and even if it is a bit (or very) idealized, I think it's legit.

good point. Koto music is kinda plain...

Um... Huh?

QED

good point. Koto music is kinda plain, but for god sake let me see Houtsuki animated.

I disagree about what you and the other person (I'm too lazy to quote him/her as well) said about koto music being plain and boring. I've been listening to whatever koto music I can find on YouTube and I recently purchased the CD with this manga's music. Sure, some classic pieces can be sort of hard to listen to and maybe kinda boring, but that happens with a lot of classical music. But the original compositions, being more modern and all, are definitely easier to listen to (and truly beautiful). If you think about it, that's the whole issue that caused the club's advisor to be worried about Tenkyuu. It wasn't a classical piece and it had a rather easy to follow melody, but it was still worthy of winning. And if you listen to Ryuseigun and Kuon, the other two pieces our Tokise club has played, you'll see that both of them are awesome and beautiful. I don't think they could be called boring. Even Roku Dan, played by Hotsuki (there's a version on the CD) has a very beautiful charm (though I do admit that the Roku Dan, being awfully classic, can get a bit boring. But hey, it's only after eight minutes of listening to it and the anime wouldn't do that). And don't get me started on the songs of the other teams. Meiryou's Hyakka Fu is absolutely amazing.

The anime would be full of original compositions and modern takes of classical music. And even the classical pieces, that can get plain or boring for the uneducated ears (including myself, of course), wouldn't be performed for so many minutes that it would get dull.

So, uh... TL;DR No, I don't think it would be boring. The only thing that worries me about an anime is that the animation could be ugly and I don't want any ugliness to tarnish this beautiful story.

I am not worthy of Akira chan sensei's blush!!!

Oh, by the way, my total love is now given to Nene.  (Old man sucker light is going at the cyclic rate!!!)

Does anyone know if I can purchase Tenkyuu digitally via amazon.co.jp ? Or do I need to buy the whole physical album since I'm from the US? Thanks!

I'm also from the US (California).  Buy it!  I did, and it is totally worth it.  I received it three days ago and have probably listened to the whole album twelve or fifteen times, and I'm still not tired of it.  If you like koto, it totally rocks!!

You can get a digital copy here (it's the 12th song): https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B06XN6535C/ref=dm_cd_album_lnkThey also ship the physical CD with some posters and shit, if you rather get that. It ships internationally.

It would be nice. But also very tricky. When you write a story about non-existing dragons or unicorns, you an at least animate them and people will see them on the screen. But when you write in your story that koto music is awesome, you cannot later fake it in the anime. People will look at animations of all the musicians being awesome, but at the same time, hear the actual plain and boring koto music. It wouldn't go well.

TOKISE YOU BETTER WIN THE WHOLE DEAL!

Classic sports manga move but it's always refreshingly earnest =)

Tokise seems set up to best Meiryou at the next Nationals, but I'm not sure if Amyuu is gonna have them take down this God of Koto high school that's won for the past several years.

Damn, that's a loss-flag if I ever saw one...

Well they always win until the semi after that it's 50-50 chance of win and lose in the finals.

This manga deserves an anime. Instead of the usual half-assed adaptations of generic/cliche Light Novels we get every season, this would surely make a great anime.

I may have said this countless time, but how tf is this awesome stuff only got 4k+ subscribers ?? Does koto manga sound so boring readers don't even bother to try some chapters first? I'm seriously crying here! (especially after reading latest RAW)

Well, I have (being a sixty year old guy) a hard time finding sympathy for someone who disowns and kicks out his middle-school aged son.  I dislike being around children who are totally disrespectful of adults, but have rarely found children like that who have come from a remotely normal household.  Chika (self chosen name, rather than birth name), was apparently kicked out of his father's house when he was around fourteen years of age.  I wasn't a wuss at that age, but my father could have bounced me off the walls if he wanted to.  As I adored my father ,who spent every available moment with me and my sister, the worst thing I could imagine was not being trusted by him.   I kind of get the impression that Chika's so-called father was a self-important douchebag who, while paying no attention to his child, wanted merely to divorce himself from any trouble his son might embroil him in.  In other words, a self serving scumbag.  I sort of understand why some readers would wish a reconciliation, but much of the real world scenario would involve said son being involved in drug abuse, homelessness, and suicide.  Shit for brains dad left it to his father and his sister.  Wow, what a father!  My sympathy for said father is in the dictionary:  somewhere between shit and syphillis.

I feel sorry for the school that went last.
