She dragged evil granny into the car?!

Oh, boy.  Don't tell me

Spoiler

As much as I love this manga, I might drop it if that actually happens. If every single character is redeemed after being an antagonist the conflict in the story feels cheap.

God bless Akira. Everything is better with Akira.

Spoiler

Thanks Akira for appearing in the latest chapter! Every chapter with Akira is always cute.

should've scrolled down a bit more

wait seriously, that was the one? Man, I found this out right after finishing ch46 and I was like "Nah, maybe not this one"
Seriously...

Akira is seriously the best damn character in this series.
Holy shit what an MVP.

But yeah no bitch grandma will never be redeemed in my eyes no matter what.

AKIRA

Nah, if we can get rid of that character this way I am fine with it.

Kouta is such a cute smol cinnamonroll—getting in the way of a Chika x Houtsuki moment!

I'll fight anyone who doesn't think this is cute af.

After these chapters, I still think Tokise's going to qualify. Himesaka worked a lot, and Hakuto will no doubt show an even better performance as per shounen conventions. But everything is coming together for Tokise. They trained with one of the best koto player in Japan (Akira), and they're performing a piece Houtsuki put all her soul into it, and she shared those feelings with everyone so they're all emotionally connected. Plus Houtsuki's mother is gonna be watching. And let's not forget that one of the main points of the story is for Kurata to go to the nationals, and everyone wants to accomplish this for his sake too.

Imagine all those feelings put together into the most emotionally-moving performance ever. It's gonna be on a level of its on.

Well yes and no I'd imagine.

HS in Japan isn't mandatory, so those that do go to HS are going for a purpose. HS in Japan is kinda like college in the US where students choose to go to schools specific to what they want to do. For some it is go to college, for others sports, and in the case here, go to a famous "Kyoto School". That is why you see the difference in caring between the schools just shown. One is a Kyoto powerhouse and the other is a school where the students are only in the club because it is mandatory to join clubs so they likely have other interests.

Now the US does get like that despite our mandatory public HS system where everyone typically just goes to HS based on where they live. You still have HS such as "football schools" or "top ranked math schools" that recruit students or students will seek them out and move just to go to those schools.

All of those kids that go to a school specifically for a special program are most definitely serious.

As someone from another country where HS isn't mandatory too, I can say "HS in Japan isn't mandatory, so those that do go to HS are going for a purpose. HS in Japan is kinda like college in the US where students choose to go to schools specific to what they want to do." is unlikely to be the case... Even if it isn't mandatory, still it's unimaginable to not continue to HS or a specialized-HS (such as one specialized in IT or Engineering, which, AFAIK, Japan has some kind of this specialized HS too) unless you have a very, very serious reason. Surely one can has a reason to aim for particular school, but overall, it's just something as natural as you're going from elementary to middle school. And reading wikipedia article of Japanese HS, yep, I'm convinced it's more or less the same as the one in my country. Some might have purposes, but for majority, going to HS after Junior HS is just a natural thing to do.

Too much weight was put on this being Kurata and Kurusu's last year. My thoughts? They'll get into the nationals, and the next year 'til the nationals will be them training and the author wrapping up the plot threads, like

Spoiler
The thrust of the story has been how Kurata(Four-eyes-san) wanted to win the nationals. If this feels like successive pacing would be abrupt, keep in mind that about a chapter and a half was given to Himesaka. If other schools don't get the same treatment for in the Preliminaries, they will at the nationals. And, as said, still need to resolve romantic plot threads, perhaps Akira's Grandmother will interfere,
Spoiler
something involving the Tokise Club Advisor...

And, as the translators explained, it will be a year, if I remember correctly, 'til the nationals after this (which is why its the third year's last chance.) A lot can happen in a year, they can train more, explore their backstories, other love interests, etc., etc.

I agree. Though spoiler below for answers regarding latest chapter's RAW. Dunno if you've read it.

I thing I know how our Tokise can outnumber The all girls performance. It is, that Three Paraphrases is loud and fast all the time. Unity ok, awesome, super techniques, live bridges tune included, but it's all  precision and velocity.

It's too hard, too overwhelming and one of the strong points of koto is the grace in softness.

After hearing Three Paraphrases video, I must agree. The technique is very difficult and unity is a must, but it feels like lacking dynamics. But judges have their own taste so...

if team goes to national this year, this manga will end fast.

I predict they will lose. 3rd year won't make it to national, instead they will join again in 3rd year preliminiary. It fits shounen more.

Some of them (probably chika, houtsuki and that other 17 string dude) will join mixed team along with Himesaka and that bullied girl (forgot her name)

Or there will be a tie.

Or they will go to national and losing there and try again next year.

Reading this manga makes me wonder, do Japanese students really take club activities that seriously?

As someone who was in Highschool Band and whose band placed well multiple times at music in the park amongst other events. We take these things very seriously. Of course the band had people who either had a passing interest or no interest but many were extremely motivated. Many took instruments home to practice, and the teacher expected us to do so.

We stayed after school for practice, went to various fields and schools to practice when possible. Things got significantly more complicated during football season where we had to practice marching and playing on the fields on a hot day for marching band then practice for concert band then take home the instruments to practice some more. I still reminisce on the hilarity that I used to gloat when our band teacher got us permission to get half-day off (usually before important events) so we could practice and gloated nonstop how we don't have to be in class. Then go off to practice for concert band for 4 hours which is significantly harder than just sitting in class.

Things only get worse in college and I personally went into an IT field but most of my friends are still musicians who pursued a career in music. Still have blinding admiration for all my friends who not only goes to school and plays music all day, then goes home and practices for 8+ hours, and then goes to gigs to play, and still finds time to hang out (not counting when a jury is nearby).

Some do, and some don't. I would imagine that the extracurriculars at more prestigious schools (especially competitive avenues such as bands and orchestras) would have stricter practice requirements and more internally motivated students joining. Talent draws in other talents, after all.

It's the same in America (and most other countries) as well. Of course, this IS a sports manga at heart so it's extra serious ;)

exactly, when aiming for a national level tournament the practice goes to insane levels, when I was younger our school passed the regional prelims (in basketball) and to make it to nationals, the teacher allowed some students to use the PE hour of other grades to keep training, we made it in the end (to the nationals, nothing big there, a decent participation), but it was really a hell training

and the ones in the chorus club practice every single day for 2 weeks before a concert. Sometimes it goes serious business, it depends on the students and the teachers in charge (their motivation obviously).

videolink for the song in chapter 46

Woaaah!! Thanks so much!!
