I never thought I'd see the day when people considered a Grand Blue scanlation like this to be acceptable quality. It's disheartening.

It's an outright shame.

It's readable for the most part (though I certainly can't speak to the accuracy of the TL), but the injected memes and shameless plugging where there was TS/image editing work take away from what would have been an otherwise enjoyable scanlation. Why would you do that to yourself, much less the series you're scanlating? It's reminiscent of some of the crap that certain fansub groups pull. Amusing at first, but then you start wondering about the integrity of the whole product. What *didn't* they alter? Is this really representative of what's going on in the original material?

I don't feel this was a low-effort scanlation by any means, but it's disappointing (and concerning) to see a group expend actual effort, only to shoot themselves in the foot so many times in a single chapter. I'm sure they thought it was funny, though. Whatever floats their boat.

Of course, if the goal is to be the very best meme machine like no one ever was, this is evidence of their accession to the throne.

Convert to "The True Faith" now all of you Heretics.

And Pilgrim 2 Times a Year Now, Once in Summer and Once in Winter.

Honest question.

Does Subby-D's translation read a little odd to you?

I'm not a native English speaker, but I have a slight difficulty in understanding some scenes in one go. Honest and objective answer, please. And please don't use this to insult the scanslators.

TBH i feel that certain choice of words are a little odd, and of course, some grammar mistakes and typos on character names are slightly distracting. Also, I felt like the whole scene where they're discussing about Kouhei's multiple copies of collection is somehow translated wrong? It feels like the nuance is wrong- especially with Kouhei suddenly admitting that he drew them himself. I didn't read the RAWs, so I can't be so sure about it.

Other than that, I have no complaints since I at least understood everything else.

Thanks subby ,, appreciate it

My fellow reader, please refrain from non-meme post or an autistic grade-schooler with the mental of the terribly retarded might get triggered by the wall of text, feel empowered to report it to the mod and one of you might get crucified for derailment, off-topic non-meme post, or having opinion at all to be discussed with in the comment section because it is against the rule. On that note, meme post r da tru comment

if you want to discuss, start a new topic post though it will be less fruitful than posting it in the comment section. look at the above topic for example. there's even a special snowflake you won't find anywhere there.

While I think some people are being needlessly harsh, criticism is important for improvement.

This person gets it. If someone sees their work being criticized, most people don't just immediately think they should be offended, most actually try and take those criticisms and further improve their work. There are sub groups out there that were absolute garbage at one point, but through tons of criticism actually improved and their series became easily readable and watchable. If I recall correctly Coalgirls was like that, not translating basic terms like tsundere or adding suffixes in the beginning, but they heard the criticisms and actually made their translations something people did not hate and not intrude on the enjoyment the series being translated gave. I might be thinking of a different sub group, but you get my point.

Good god theres alot of entitlement.

I'm just happy its a proper english translation, thanks Subby!

Why are all of you dissing on the quality of his scan? He did his best, and it's readable and enjoyable. You purists are really annoying. -.-

Entitlement? I guess everyone is entitled to proper scanlation outside of April 1st. Weebslike translation is one thing (and i can accept that) but he feels the need to paste Iori's face all over the place. Now if only he included 'joke/meme translation' on chapter title then maybe most people will let it slide.

I knew this was coming but I still laughed.

Gnah's comment. Spoilered because of a wall of text:

I agree with you, but at the same time I have some different opinions. Like e.g. translating the suffixes you mentioned to the English language could be hard, as there is no English equivalent to the suffix -chan, but that's not the point. It's about leaving a simple noun untranslated, because of "different connotations". There is a lot of nouns that are perfectly easy to translate from Japanese to English even if they have different connotations, such as hentai in the case of the latest chapter. The meaning here is pretty simple, and it should be translated to pervert. There's a reason that "Just according to keikaku" became a joke. It is redundant to leave an untranslated Japanese word in an almost fully translated to English sentence.

It's as if another translator just left a sentence like "This takai building is my favourite place", because "takai" could mean tall, or expensive, depending on the context.

If it can be, then it should be translated.

Other than that, yeah I agree. I could even say that copy and pasting "funny" jokes, and because of that, changing a given work into something different, which then distorts the readers' experience is not something wanted by anyone.

On a side note: I think the manga you thought about would be "Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo Dorei Majutsu", and the translator would be whitepod.

So cake, I mean, cute!

i miss seeing iori and kouhei conspiring together, being a pair of magnificent bastards they are and this chapter completely makes up for it.

and man, i've been seeing kouhei hanging around at grand blue so much, i've came to believe that he also lives there. he actually got a proper house of his own, huh. and by the looks of it, he's pretty loaded for a college student.

and that's another one into my reacts folder

Please come back helvetica, even if i appreciated subby works :(

I've noticed a sum of these too, and despite that their translation is still much better than ours. I'm banking that they released the digitals like that first just so it can garner attention for the more polished physical releases next Summer.

I do feel that they are jeopardizing their physical release by doing that, though. If the quality is not up to par that could very much impact sales of the physical volumes, as people might shy away from purchasing such sloppy work for full price. That could very much generate the wrong kind of attention, as in "they're doing a half-arsed job, stay away".

I didn't see anyone dissing the quality of the scans and or the translations where he did not tamper with it. Ok, one guy got nuts because "hentai" wasn't translated, but seriously, that much is to be expected as known vocabulary for anybody reading manga, much like the name suffixes, onee-/onii-chan, etc.

What I've seen critisized, and what I actually agree with, is that shopping in different stuff (like the faces on pg. 32 or intentional mistranslation which do not serve to better adapt to the audience like the scholarship translation on pg. 5) because the TL thought he's funny don't belong in there. I am aware of and fully agree with translations needing to be changed to fit the target audience. I'm doing translations myself. But there's a limit to it, and that involves changes the pictures to anything that is not supposed to help support the translation or trying to bring a "personal touch" into the works by changing content, such as subby did here.

I've had another manga here, I forgot which, in which the TL did so many "funny" annotations and translations (imho, it was humour for 11y/os) that I simply could not read that stuff.

I've bought volumes 1 & 2 of the digital release, and if there's one thing i would complain about, it would be that they need maybe a more thorough QC pass. There are a few obvious dialogue typos (that have nothing to do with translation/gloss) and a few panels where sound effects were partially redrawn. Hopefully these things get corrected for the physical release. Still great that they're bringing it over.

Kodansha's official release is great, and especially better than ours. Purchase it when you can digitally or physically to read the series in the way it's meant to be read.

Oh god it's subby D, I remember when he showed up and randomly did a joke translation chapter for Ookami Shounen which kinda derailed the main translation. Aaaaaaand just checked that's still his last translation a year ago... My expectations for the quality of this chapter are at an all time low

Here is the purest Aina you will ever see.

Not entirely sure why... but that image actually kinda scares me....

Tbh I was kind of hoping an arc of Aina returning would make her a more interesting character, cause right now her and the older sister are the obly characters I don't particularly care for

This is incredibly stupid, considering it sounds like you haven't read the official release. Our (Helvetica) translations are just as liberal in terms of localization as the official release. If you want it to be "literal", which I hear a lot, then it'd be deadpan humour all across the board. Many jokes and scenarios are changed up in our translations to actually make sense in English without a note (most of the time) to explain why you should think it's funny. One of this manga's most famous panels featuring Aina's bookshelf with the "Encyclopedia Tittanica" (can't remember the chapter) on it is a prime example. None of those titles are what they say in Japanese because they wouldn't convey the same reaction and meaning that they should to an English audience. This is translation. If those titles were to be translated literally then that would be transliteration, something you do not want.

I salute you. Far too many people, including supposed translators, don't seem to get this. I have two friends who are professional interpreters (albeit not in Japanese) who near have a seizure when I show them some of those "literal" and T/L note laden translations floating around the place.
