Dude, did you skip the entire second half of what they said? They're not playing that cliche at all, much less in the way you suggested they will.

So am I the only one who thinks that her snapping was very out of place given what we've seen of her character so far?

dood. she was testing snakebites and medicine on herself. waddayouthink?

Mm... I'm liking the tastefully naughty humor in this chapter, and thoroughly enjoyed the attendant being served a taste of her own medicine, so to speak.

I adore Maomao. Her curiosity and gaze that renders to a mere slug~ And I didn’t expect this from the first chapter but the two empress candidates (what’s the best word here?) are honestly really adorable.

I think "consort(s)" would fit well.

Ooh, you corrected my spelling and posted a meme, you've totally defeated my arguments.

-cut-

Stop trying to treat manga like it's medically accurate. It's just fiction for the sake of entertainment; don't take it so seriously.

I post a meme. You write a short essay (with web links no less, making the wonka/webMD meme all the more appropriate). Gee, I wonder which one was telling other people to not take this fictitious manga so seriously, again? ◔_◔

Just because there's no research for something, doesn't make it incorrect unless both directly disproved and widely accepted by the majority by accredited bodies. It would be like sentencing an alleged suspect for a crime, just because there's no evidence to prove they didn't do it, not because there was any evidence to prove they did.

At the end of the day, you're welcome to disagree with people mate, but you can't tell others what to think, just by hearsay (what you read on the internet in this case)...otherwise, there'd be more vaccine/autism shitstorms happening. I'd rather get my medical advice from a doctor than someone on the internet.

Roflcat: That comes up in literally the next chapter, actually...

As for Maomao's actions: She's always had a rather "gruff" personality, even if she tends to hide it from others. In this specific case her neck is literally on the line, as she was asked by the Emperor himself to look after Lady Rifa. Then she goes and finds out that this fool of an attendant was actually causing the problem after she tried shutting her out of the room. Seeing as she was given a "divine mandate" to look after Lady Rifa, yeah I can see how she became stressed enough to snap. Especially when none of these servants works in the Jade Palace, nor do any of them have any authority over her. And in this case, she pretty much has authority over them in matters of Lady Rifa's health and rehabilitation.

So am I the only one who thinks that her snapping was very out of place given what we've seen of her character so far?

Someone who can make this face in front of another who's supposedly much higher ranked than her, albeit within restraint of trying to hide it? I'm convinced enough.

But her extremities also lie within medicines and poisons, easily getting carried away when they're involved. Her snapping at another court lady and then regretting it immediately afterwards, fits snugly within my expectations of her character.

So am I the only one who thinks that her snapping was very out of place given what we've seen of her character so far?

You're probably not the only one, but I personally believe it wasn't that out of place. We've constantly seen her getting frustrated about all the crap she is getting forced to do, and we can see that that frustration keeps building up with little to no outlet. Then, she happens upon someone willfully poisoning someone, which not only is likely against her beliefs but is also sabotaging her job which she has already equated the success of to her life. You tell me if you don't think someone that stressed wouldn't snap like that against someone who they believe is intentionally putting them into an early grave.

Speaking from personal experience, no. Most medical professionals live, mentally, on the crossroads between "I'm an expert, I know what I'm doing here" and "I really care about human lives because I've devoted my career to curing them". Imagine if someone were to come in and do your job really badly while you were watching, how annoyed you'd feel. Now, add that to the fact that they're literally (not figuratively, literally) killing someone by doing your job so badly. End result, you put a doctor or nurse's patient in jeopardy through ignorance or, heaven forbid, malice, and they'll get really scary very fast.

So am I the only one who thinks that her snapping was very out of place given what we've seen of her character so far?

Not really. She's actually a very strict and orderly character. She's mad at her abductor for abducting her but not for paying their share from her own wages. Then she's constantly pissed at Jinshi because he apparently can appear anywhere, anytime, and she accused him of having too much free time for being (looking) so carefree. So far she have show that she's like to see things in orderly fashion, which probably comes from her own profession as an apothecary. So it is no wonder that she snapped very hard when someone go against an orders especially when it involved health and medicine.

She is you scary apothecary that will wack your head if you dare to interrupt her diagnosis or go against her advises.

That was badass

Blatantly false. See: how almost everyone views their childhood, where they had no personal freedom but also no responsibilities, as the most happy part of their lives.

Here's an analogy: Kids grow up and want to become independent, no longer bossed around by their parents. Among those who are forced to move back in with their parents in their adulthood due to financial restrictions, and live in a more secure and well-fed environment, you'll be hard pressed to find one that is satisfied about this! Even if they get along super well with their parents, making it illegal for them to leave and pursue their independence (and trade of their choice) anymore would be even more of a horror to inflict upon these poor souls.

So am I the only one who thinks that her snapping was very out of place given what we've seen of her character so far?

@Nya-chan: to most people on this Earth, living with freedom and dignity is a far better life than living pampered in luxury without those things.

Blatantly false. See: how almost everyone views their childhood, where they had no personal freedom but also no responsibilities, as the most happy part of their lives.

But because everyone has their own opinion, you will find a lot of people would rather have that pampered lifestyle even under these conditions versus spending a lifetime living in the countryside with an agrarian lifestyle even if it means they live longer. Dignity and freedom might have definitions but what it means to each individual is different, a lot of people would call being a farmer being a slave to the land

All of the farmers I know are proud of their work. It's just so real, yanno? Farmers never have to ask themselves 'what's the point of doing this?' or feel disconnected from other living things. It's raw purpose, it's bringing life to life.

I suppose that this way of thinking you speak of must exist somewhere, people come in all kinds after all. But I wouldn't expect that to be 'a lot of people', because most people seek their own purpose. Taking their dreams and pursuits away from them would not be met with gratitude. Even if they haven't discovered them yet, taking the chance away from them is enough to make someone depressed. Humans are born to be free. Those rare exceptions who would be happy in pampered captivity are uncommon enough that it could be considered to be a huge anomaly.

But yeah, for those who are happy to live that way- as you say, dignity and freedom may have a different meaning to them.

damn she straight up dragged the bitch by the hair LOL

the emperor is a man of exquisite taste

make some melon juice so the emperor is happy, right?

I adore this series. I'm glad I gave it a shot. Maomao is bae

are we talking about this comic or about history of living woman in dynasty era!?

but if we are talking about preference during that era, it depends on economic of that kingdom and the living place of that woman. In the cities, majority of woman would prefer being pampered by wealthy husband, or I should say, being married off to wealthy family, though, it would not guarantee their happiness. Because wealth and power(status) are every person would want.

Of course this context is outside woman who being married because they are being sold or forced by their family/someone.

Angry Maomao is great, but embarrassed Maomao when she realized Jinshi was still there is good too.

Well, this probably has something to do with it. But she also traumatized Rifa's other maids that saw her outburst, and they are terrified every time they see her from now on. She runs into them a few times later on. Remember that she goes out of her way to not be noticed.

Mao mao did go too far, but she finally got an outlet for some of that pent up anger. XD good for her.
