Description: Otaku Sakamichi Onoda has just entered high school and plans to join the anime club. In middle school, Onoda didn’t have any friends with whom he could talk about anime, games, Akihabara and other otaku things, and he is hoping he can make such friends in the anime club, but he finds out it's been disbanded. In order to reestablish the club he tries to find 4 other people who would like to join.

Since he was a little boy, Onoda has ridden his mamachari–a bulky bicycle with a step-through frame mainly used for short rides, such as for casual fun or to pick up groceries–to go to Akihabara every week to check out or buy otaku things. Fellow freshman Shunsuke Imaizumi and bicyclist, while training, notices a boy (Onoda) riding his mamachari up a steep road.

Freshman and road racing cyclist, Shokichi Naruko visits Akihabara to get some Gundam plastic models for his younger brothers and meets Onoda who catches his attention because of the his cycling skill on the mamachari and later find out they go to the same school. Later on, both Naruko and Imaizumi try to convince him to join the bicycle racing club, but will he?

Wow, Midousuji thinking about Ishigaki in a not-completely-disparaging way.

chapter 343, I think they went from 2.5km to 1.7km

chapter 344, 1.7km to <.9k

Depending how much time they spend on the second pack, maybe it won't take 4 more chapters to settle this. XD

Naruko better not lose now

Spoiler

I've been wanting Naruko to win a significant goal as an all-rounder since Imaizumi pushed him towards being an all-rounder.  (I mean, sorry Imaizumi, I do like you but NARUKO.  Also if you catch up then Hakogaku is in a better place to win and I am not for their straight victory in day 1 at all.  They lucked out on the climb, too, and not even 'cause Teshima stopped for Manami.)  Ahhhh punk them all!  ... but I seriously dunno what's gonna happen.  1700m might as well be an eternity in manga-time, too.  I guess since they've reached this point topographically Kishigami will be mostly a non-factor for the rest of day 1, after all.

Naruko better not lose now

Spoiler

OK, I thought the cat muscle thing was it, but Kuroda's scab gimmick is even weirder.  Also, I refuse to believe Kishigami is actually out of this.  The meat herd left him behind, and that's no good, also he's sneaky.

Belated thought about 339: HEY IMAIZUMI, MIKI IS SORT OF YOUR FRIEND, DON'T BE AN ASS.

340: Kishigami descends upon the meat herd, Midousuji who?  I wonder which side Imaizumi/Kuroda tuck. >.>  OMG, good job, Naruko!

341: In his way, Naruko has a lot of composure.

"Want to cooperate until we reach the goal?" uh, Naruko didn't even cooperate with Tadakoro last year....

Naruko knows all about ppl who aren't used to the word "friendship" >.>;;;

Hm, ok, I dunno what Imaizumi's gonna do here.  Sohoku and Hakogaku had a temporary alliance last year as well.  Whether he cooperates or not, Ashikiba's the only one who will arrive rested, he'd theoretically just be helping to deliver him.  He could trust in Naruko, but that's, like, against his religion.  And if it's Kuroda vs. Midousuji, even with Midousuji aiming for the goal and Kuroda only aiming for like 500m ahead of the goal, I wouldn't normally bet on Kuroda.  OK, now that Kishigami's gotten one grope in, what is he doing?

I have a feeling Midosuji is going to win, but I want Naruko to win and regain what he lost back in the winter.  I would love to see the wheels make an appearance at the IH.

Midosuji always has plans up his sleeve.  I find it really bad that Midosuji is shown restricting blood flow to his muscles, that's really bad for you, especially with how much he's exerting those muscles, and how much blood is flowing.

Well... you know... This is the final stretch to the goal :).

NARUKOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

This looks like some kind of horror manga. The faces and bodies slightly remind me of Junji Ito

Reading c338: Ride-by gropings must be in Kishigami's future.

Reading c339: lol, Naruko and Imaizumi's discussions of friendship... don't worry Imaizumi, I'm sure Sugimoto would be your friend too if you asked!  Uhh... how is it that Midousuji is not the most terrifying thing on that two-page spread.

So now that we've finished stretching Midosuji to all the directions, we're just going to make him a giant.

I can't wait to see where Physical Deformations with Midousuji could go.

I fell behind because a certain site where I used to download from died... anyway....

Midousuji's face in the final frame of 335 behind Kishigami's overt perversity: amazing

Imaizumi's face as he contemplates Naruko's explanation of his toe training in 336: amazing

Naruko and Imaizumi somehow are Naruko and Tadakoro, redux.  WHY NOT, I GUESS.

I don't really see how Kuroda and Ashikiba splitting up to overtake them that time... matters.  I mean, clearly they could overtake them either way at that particular moment.  If they had enough room to pass by on both sides than clearly Sohoku couldn't have blocked them.  And not reacting this far from the goal doesn't particularly matter either, they haven't really lost ground.

MIDOSUJI looking crazy as hell per usual...  Can't wait for him to make his move...

As much of a POS some people think he is, he is definitely one of the best cyclists in the IH, if not the best.

i'm interested in reading this. Is there any romance? And is the sport's competition realistic?

the cycling portrayal is quite realistic although there's a fantasy element when the characters deploy their special abilities and such, its a shonen after all.

About romance, I'd say some of the boy's bond is so deep they seem to be married lol

(still you can see small hints of crushes in some female characters, but its very backgrounded and we definitely won't see any romance actively presented in the plot)

you can feel how much the author loves biking himself.

I'd reccomend it, its a good read!

but of course!!! the love of bicicles is present in all places (and anime; in the case of onoda)

Onoda's love is divided between newest-bike-from-KanzakiCycleShop and delicious flatchest loli pettanko himehime.  But his love is pure so it's ok even if she does not stay flatchest loli forever.

No particular romance currently at least. As for realistic, depends on how much you know about cycling, but I think its not a bad representation of the sport though I'm no expert.

Clearly you don't watch enough pro cycling and grand tour races if you're questioning this. Mechanicals happen all the time to the race leader, and the leader's pack always waits when this happens. There's no appropriate analogy to be made with other sports because this sort of gentlemanly behaviour is rooted deeply in the sport's century old traditions, even if they're not official rules. It's like asking why you're not allowed to make contact with the other player in basketball when you can do so in hockey/rugby/etc.

hahaha whatever man. I know what you're saying but what if he hadn't heard that spectator and kept going? would that have made him a bad person?
also if it's a mechanical, it has to be a failure of some point. It cannot be a simple malfunction (like you drop your chain, ahem, or roll an improperly glued tire). Mechanicals need to be beyond the rider's control - broken spoke, bent rim, broken saddle, stuff like that. If the bike isn't adjusted right, that's not a mechanical. If it breaks, it is.

edit: we're gonna agree to disagree so thats where i'm leaving it. that aside I'm glad you're enjoying the manga

lol i watch, ride and play multiple sports (including cycling) and do know and have seen the different acts of chivalry and gentleman gestures.
If, for example someone deliberately threw a tree branch into the wheel or a spectator tries to push a cyclist over. That I can understand.
The guy just didn't change gears properly, which can happen if you do it at the wrong time. Its like passing the puck or ball to the opposition accidentally (if it came off your foot wrong or maybe the pitch was slippery and made the ball curve more than it should have etc), you think they're gonna go "oh, he didn't MEAN to pass to me so i'll just pass it back to him"
Then they score a goal and win the Stanley cup or world cup or whatever.

But hey, thats just my take on it.

Still pissed Koga isn't a main player at the IH.....

Glad to see things are about to get serious now!!!

ACT 2 BEGINS NOW!!!

you guys dont really know much about irl cycling it seems....

its common gentlemanship to do this kind of stuff, even in tour de france and important races.

Fair races and all that.

(Ppl don't really seem to care about hiding spoilers in comments, is it ok...?  I don't mind, but do the mods ever step in?)

*flips desk*
The guys an idiot, its not respect or pride for him i feel right now. Chains coming off is normal and should but part of the hazard of riding in a race same as braking too soon going into a corner or changing gears at the wrong time (sometimes chains come off cause of that). Its not something you stop and wait for your opponent

I did watch a tiny bit of ep25 before stopping and when the spectator was like "sometimes in this situation the opponent will stop and wait" I was like WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?????

It's not like it's a race for 2, no one else would freeze up, what if the person in 3rd place comes up and takes over?

How does one judge how much time has been lost to the person putting the chain back on vs. the other person noticing the issue and stopping for them????

This is the most insane nonsense I've ever heard, but it seems par for the course for yowapeda so whatever. XD

(Well, he has Manami's respect, I guess, but.... >.>;; )

Expanding on my earlier comment....

Spoiler

And another neck to neck battle comes to an end. I wish this author would try something new already. It never changes, always neck to neck, no matter how big the skill difference is.

Yeah.... This was the only chance he had to actually make himself look lik ea good choice for the InterHigh team ..... I guess he wanted to be fair, and that's respectable in a sport, but he lost the race because of it.  He could have won, then went back to minami (even though the chain would have already been done).  Stilll... ridiculous.

I'm actually getting annoyed at how this interhigh is going....  The sprinting race was just stupid having a guy who thought he was an "All Rounder" be able to catch up to someone who's a 100000% Sprinter beast, is just silly.  IT would have been great to have Koga face him, but alas...  We get Teshima Junta instead....

I think that Minami losing twice, would have been reallllllyyyy bad for him in the long run though, so I Feel this was the way for the Author to be "hey Minami, you actually can win something."

I think it would have been something awesome if the Author did something like just before the goal Teshima had a muscle spasm and had to disconnect from his bike, and try to win that way.  Basically an all or nothing battle where Minami freaks out over his chain, and Teshima tries everything in his power to walk his bike across, or something alone those "pathetic" lines.

I just hope the rest of this doesn't disappoint....

At the same time though... The first day will probably go to Hakone, which will put even more pressure on the team... Maybe Teshima will be the one to guide the team, who knows...

I feel the author is making it so that Shohoku's win was a "Fluke," and people will doubt them, until of course Onoda comes to the rescue.

If you notice Onoda has been a non-factor in the race so far, so I'm assuming that's this role for Day 1.  I'm assuming he will have an attitude change and day 2 will be putting in a lot of work for the team.
