In order to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the newspaper's founding, Tozai News owner, Daizo Ohara commissions the creation of the "Ultimate Menu", leaving it in the hands of the apathetic and abrasive Shiro Yamaoka and the newly hired Yuko Kurita. What, at first, seems like a straightforward assignment eventually turns on its head with the arrival on the scene of Yamaoka's father, the legendary artist and gourmet, Yuzan Kaibara, who has a deep and unresolved conflict with his son that will eventually morph into the battle of Ultimate VS.
